What Art Should Do For You

It may just be me, but I cannot wait to decorate my space! (For me, it’s an apartment when I’m married, but for some of you it may be your dorm or a room you are remodeling or revamping.) One of the coolest things I’ve seen in stores are the suddenly stylish collections of paintings and pictures. I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love art! The only issue is that, now-a-days, art is on the rise and some people buy it because of who it was by or because they think that it will impress their friends or spouses.  Those are not very good reasons to buy a work of art.

Art should speak to you in a way that nothing else does. I’m sure we’ve all seen the commercials where the woman is shopping and suddenly a statue or item starts speaking to her convincing her of why she needs to buy the item. That’s what art should do for you. You should be able to stare at the artwork for a long while and not get tired of it. It should stir something inside of you that you like. When you buy the art, it should almost feel like an impulsive buy because it had spoken to you. This, of course, is my advice to all.

For those of you who feel that art should compliment the room in which it is going,  you should browse artwork and select by the feeling it gives you. Does it make you happy? Thoughtful? Somber? You should be sure that the tone of the artwork compliments the tone of the room that you want it in. If you don’t, the resulting tone or theme might be misconceived. For example, let’s say you had a room that you needed to decorate. The color is a bright red and you put up a picture of “Starry Night” by van Gogh.

Can you imagine the conflicting messages the color of the room and the peacefulness of the painting would construe in a person? Now imagine the same piece of art in a room that is a pale yellow. That gives it a peaceful feeling, don’t you think? What about a blue room? I think that would give me a sense of relaxation and sleepiness.

You see, artwork isn’t used just to make a room look furnished; artwork can be used to evoke feelings in people from peacefulness to discomfort depending on how you use it. I hope these tips will help you in the future. Thanks for reading!
